WEEK 5: process demo
This is a demostration of how to go about doing about task 2
INSTRUCTIONS
In Task 2 we will be required to convey the express typographically
the content in a 2-page editorial spread (200 mm × 200 mm per page)
for this work. We have to select one of the 3 available text
options.
No pictures are permitted. Some very tiny visual elements, such as
line, shade, etc., might be permitted, though. We are to use Adobe
illustrator and Adobe inDesign
Task 2: Text Formatting and Expression
1. Sketches
For the type expressions of code Mr vinod pointed out the importance of
context because even though I did make type expressions for code they were
depicted code as secret meaning instead of it as a set of rules so I ended
up creating a type expression for build instead, this reminded me about
when I read about semantics for my further reading in Task 1 and so it
made me create a design which was had a clear and concise
meaning.

type expression using ITC New Baskerville made in Adobe illustrator
18/05/2023 week 7
I did the build on using a font with a a heavy weight in
order for me to execute the brick idea but Mr Vinod said it was too
bulky which is true so I decided to use a font which looks more
elegant and classy like ITC new baskerville . I found it interesting
that the serifs resembled pillar used in buildings shapes which added
to the impact of the building type expression

Layout 5: I was advised that putting the heading in the gutter is not a
good idea
Layout 4:I never used the negative space well, the gray value was too
high and the font was too heavy and I had to research on better layout
options

I think I accomplished a good gray value for the text and used the
negative space well.
LAYOUT 2
Fonts: ITC NEW BASKERVILLE (Roman, Bold)
Point size: 10 pt (text), 20 pt ("A Designer seeks
to build the community not divide it ), 40pt (A CODE TO 55pt
(BUILD ON AND LIVE BY))(heading) subheadings 12pt
Leading: 12 pt (text and subtext)
Paragraph spacing: 12pt (text and subtext)
Line length: 56 (body text)
Number of Columns:5
Margins:top10mm bottom 10mm left 10mm right 10mm
Gutter:5mm
I thought this was interesting idea but i felt like after i executed
it on InDesign it did not have much impact.I also noticed ragging of
the text which is not appropriate
LAYOUT 3
Fonts: ITC NEW BASKERVILLE (Roman, Bold)
Point size: 10 pt (text), 20 pt ("A Designer seeks
to build the community not divide it ), 89pt (A CODE TO AND LIVE
BY)105pt (BUILD ON)(heading) subheadings 12pt,18pt (subtext)
Leading: 12 pt (text and subtext)
Paragraph spacing: 12pt (text and subtext)
Line length: 60 (body text)
Number of Columns:4
Margins:top10mm bottom 10mm left 10mm right 10mm
Gutter:7mm
I decided to go with this one(LAYOUT 3) as my final submission because
I found it to look very classy and simple but it also had a dynamic feel
to it. I liked the way the line extended off the page and continued at
the bottom so that the heading is connected . I had to do some kerning
to the word "CODE"
LAYOUT 6
Fonts: ITC NEW BASKERVILLE (Roman, Bold)
Point size: 10 pt (text), 20 pt ("A Designer seeks
to build the community not divide it ), 89pt (A CODE TO AND LIVE
BY)110pt (BUILD ON)(heading) subheadings 12pt,18pt (subtext)
Leading: 12 pt (text and subtext)
Paragraph spacing: 12pt (text and subtext)
Line length: 60 (body text)
Number of Columns:4
Margins:top10mm bottom 10mm left 10mm right 10mm
Gutter:7mm
alignment
I found the bricks of the heading to be quite distracting and so I
never went with this layout

FEEDBACK
week 7: specific feedback: do more research on layouts and use a less condensed font for heading
Week 6: general feedback: general feedback: use
of Bodoni is a bad idea for large amounts of text . Do not use different
line lengths throughout your text focus on one thing at a time instead
of trying to multitask specific feedback: specific feedback:Line length is too long ,improve on layout
REFLECTIONS
Experience : At first it was really difficult for me to figure our
different layouts but after researching on different layouts its helped
with the design process. I found having to make sure everything was up to
par to what a good layout of text was tiring but ultimately that is what
makes an aesthetic and practical design. I never really found my first few
designs to be that good but I ended up liking my final piece. I often felt
discouraged when trying to find good layouts but this helped me appreciate
my final work more.
Observation: having knowledge on layouts of text from lectures in Task 1
was essential to do this task . I had to be very attentive to detail in
this task in order to create good work. I also observed that white space
plays an essential role as it helps to create a sense of visual balance,
rest and calmness and the use of white space helps to highlight the most
important information allowing the reader to focus better .
Findings : If I want to achieve cross alignment I have to make sure that
there is appropriate leading and the font size of different hierarchy of
text was proportionate. It is important to break down each task

fig 14 A type primer by John Kane
It is important to balance the dymanic counterform with the need for
the type to be readable
fig 15 assymetrical type set
This arrangement develops rich and complex counterform on the page. This
assymmetrical type set is quite striking and I might use this in further
projects
