Task 1: UX Audit: Airbnb

For this Task Students are to

  • Select a scenario case study where UX design significantly impacted a product or service’s success or failure.
  • Conduct research and analysis of the chosen case.

Identify both good and bad UX practices in the following areas:

  1. Usability
  2. Accessibility
  3. Visual Design
  4. Information Architecture
  5. User Feedback
  • Include visual evidence (e.g., screenshots) to support your analysis.
  • Present findings in a Google Slides presentation with a minimum of 6 slides.
I decided to pick AirBnb as the app I wanted to analyse because its success is heavily driven by UX design.

Task 1b: User research interview

WEEK 3 - WEEK 4

Students are to

  • Do at least 2 user interviews based on your chosen topic (which will help in creating user personas later on)
  • Use the User-Centered Design (UCD) process, guided in class.
  • Clearly define your target users.
  • Prepare interview questions based on the problems or issues found.
  • Ask questions through structured interviews.

Create a User Research document with:

  1. Project topic and goals
  2. Interviewee background (age, gender, experience, etc.)
  3. Interview questions
  4. Full transcripts and summaries
  5. Key findings from the interviews
Iman and I interviewed 1 student and 1 visitor each and recorded the interviews and proceeded to transcribe them.

Task 2: User Personas and Empathy Map

WEEK 4 - WEEK 6

Students are to work in their groups and

  • Create User Personas based on those insights.
  • Visualize the personas using a User Empathy Map.

This helps define your target users and prepares for the next step: User Journey Map.

Follow User-Centered Design (UCD) principles.

  • Document user needs, behaviors
  • emotions across key touchpoints.

Final output must include:

  1. Clear User Personas
  2. A detailed User Empathy Map
  3. Presented in a comprehensive slide deck

Task 3: User Journey Map & Ideation

WEEK 7 - WEEK 14

Students are to

  • Use the User Personas and Empathy Map to create a detailed User Journey Map.
  • Map out the user’s experience across different touchpoints.
  • Apply User-Centered Design (UCD) principles throughout the process.
  • Define each phase of the journey (e.g., awareness, action, outcome).
  • Identify pain points and areas for improvement.

Use the journey map as a base for ideation.

  • Generate design ideas and solutions based on user needs and problems.

Final output must include:

  1. A clear User Journey Map
  2. Supporting Ideation work

REFLECTIONS

This module taught me the in-depth process of UX design and the importance of truly understanding users when designing with their needs in mind. I learned how each stage of the UX process plays a critical role from conducting interviews to synthesizing insights into an affinity diagram, and then building user personas and empathy maps. These steps gave us a strong foundation for developing user journey maps, which really helped streamline and focus our design direction. The Crazy 8 ideation method was especially useful for rapidly exploring different ideas, which then fed directly into our journey mapping and wireframing process.

One thing I wish I had was more time to further refine the high-fidelity prototype, especially to improve the visual design and add smoother transitions and animations that would enhance the overall user experience. These are elements I now understand are essential in creating a polished and industry-ready product.

My overall experience with this module was truly pleasant. Ms. Wong was an amazing lecturer who gave detailed, constructive feedback and always encouraged us to push our work toward industry standards. I really appreciated her guidance and encouragement throughout the semester. Looking ahead, I’ve realised I need to manage my time better and take care of my health more consistently so I can deliver my best work without burning out.
