Project 1: Animated infographic

INSTRUCTIONS

MIB

DESCRIPTION:
After time exploring media and learning about information design, I am required to develop an infographic that presents a series of different processes as visuals rather than text.

REQUIREMENT:
Your main intention is to analyse the “delivery mechanism’s” that affect the outcomes of your infographics.
Though content is important, however the aim of this presentation is too look at what makes an infographic presentation work or does not work. This includes content but only as one of the many components of an infographic:

PART 1: Infographic poster (20%)

INSTRUCTION:
1. Choose 1 infographic poster reference from Internet (Please consult before proceed)
2. Redesign the poster into A4 size. Sketch the idea and process
3. Redesign and simplify the poster based on visual hierarchy & typography
4. Simplify the poster's design based on color, shape & pattern
5. Attach your final poster on E-Portfolio with explanation and reflective writing

PART 2: Minimal animated infographic (20%)

INSTRUCTION:
1. Animate your infographic poster into one static loop animation page
2. Loop duration in between 15-30 second
3. Size: 1080 x 1920 px (Vertical Video) upload to your own Youtube channel

SUBMISSION:
1. Digital upload into your Google Drive.
2. Online posts in your E-Portfolio and your reflective writing.

I went through pinterest and looked for some posters that I could improve. These were some of the options.

Fig 1.1 Evolution of the joker

Fig 1.2 A brief History of Music Recording

Fig 1.3 Evolution of coke

I decided to go with A brief history of music recording as the poster could be improved in many ways

What can be improved
  • the pictures used
  • make it more dynamic
  • better layout
  • colour palette
  • mood of poster

MOODBOARD DEVELOPMENT

I then went on pinterest and found visual references that I would like to incorporate in my redesign.

Moodboard

For my music evolution poster redesign, here’s what I’m taking away from this mood board:

1. Layout & Organization

  • I’ll use a timeline (maybe linear, circular, or a roadmap) to show how music has evolved.
  • I’ll divide the poster into clear sections for different eras or genres.
  • Adding icons & infographics will make key moments stand out.

2. Aesthetic & Typography

  • I want to use retro fonts that match each era’s vibe (like psychedelic for the ‘60s).
  • I’ll make sure the text is bold and high-contrast for easy reading.
  • A warm, vintage color palette (reds, oranges, beiges) will give it that nostalgic feel.

3. Visual Storytelling

  • I’ll incorporate music-inspired shapes like records, guitars, and sound waves.
  • I want to keep the design clean and engaging, without clutter.

SKETCHES

I started doing some sketches for what I want the poster to look like and gained inspiration from the moodboard.

Sketches

1. Cassette Rewinding (Left Sketch)

Concept: A cassette tape unwinds to form a timeline of music recording history.

Strengths:
  • The flowing tape naturally guides the viewer’s eye through different time periods.
  • Strong nostalgic appeal with the cassette design.

Potential Animation: The tape rewinds, revealing key music recording devices as it moves.

2. Spinning Vinyl (Middle Sketch)

Concept: A vinyl record spins, with key years placed along its grooves.

Strengths:
  • The circular motion represents continuous music evolution.
  • Visually engaging and thematically relevant to music history.

Potential Animation: The record spins, and as it stops at different points, historical moments appear.

3. Guitar Strings Timeline (Right Sketch)

Concept: A guitar’s strings lead to historical milestones, with each fret marking a key year.

Strengths:
  • The vertical layout is unique and makes good use of the guitar’s neck.
  • Strong connection to musicians and instruments.

Potential Animation: The strings vibrate or pluck as new events pop up.

What I decided to go with and why

I chose the Spinning Vinyl (Option 2) because it best represents the evolution of music in a clear and engaging way.

  • Timeless Symbol – Vinyl records span multiple eras, making them a strong representation of music history.
  • Smooth Flow – The circular motion naturally guides the viewer through key moments in time.
  • Clear & Readable – Unlike the cassette’s winding path or the guitar’s vertical layout, the vinyl keeps information structured and easy to follow.
  • Nostalgic Appeal – Vinyl has a classic and retro feel, making it instantly recognizable and visually appealing.

This design captures the continuous evolution of music while keeping the layout clean, dynamic, and engaging.

PROCESS

I first started looking for graphics and used openartai to generate images that I would use.

Openartai image generation

Background of poster

I wanted a dark background to emphasise the nostalgia of the poster and rustic kind of look. I also had the Bauhaus poster next to it to see the layout I wanted.

Adding vinyl record

I then added the vinyl to the poster and added an outline

Poster trial 1
I made the title circle around the vinyl  and added the different recording devices. I had 5 in the first timeline and 2 in the second. I added more lines in the poster for harmony. I made them brown because most of the recording devices are brown. I made the background for the timeline have a gradient colours that are the vinyl.

Poster trial 2
I tried using a navy blue colour from the record for some parts of the poster to add harmony and some interest to the background. I thought it just looked okay.

Adding grain to pictures

I got the idea from a friend to add some grain to the pictures and make it more nostalgic. I used the fonts Retro guns and arial. I used Arial for the bodies of information to increase readability. I also made the bodies of information into post form and similar lengths for it to be easily read and uniformity.

Poster trial 3

I then decided I wanted to add some warmth to the poster instead of the dark background so I made a gradient and used it in the background ad added some paper texture to the top.

ANIMATION

I then proceeded to animate my poster and make the vinyl spin and loop it. I imported my project into capcut and actually played around with the animations. Below are my trials and progress.

Adding other pngs and music

I decided to be more creative and wanted to animate the different devices as well so I did that and added some old school jazz music in the background.

REFLECTION

I absolutely loved doing this assignment and designing the poster as well as the animation. I seem to enjoy the editing aspect a lot and actually want to improve my editing skills. I observed that the graphic design aspect is something I really enjoy. I also realised I was using design principles that I learnt from the other module to apply it here. I also realised that I have figured out my best work flow and how to began and progress with a project. I noticed that I tend to work really well at the odd hours of the night which I do not know if that is a good or bad thing but it seems those are the times my brains is working well and when I am most creative and productive.
