MIB MAJOR PROJECT

PROGRESSION

WEEK 1

In this week I was not in Malaysia as my flight had been cancelled but I got briefed that we had to form groups of 4 and choose a topic for our final project.

We decided to use Figjam to put all our progress there and we brainstormed ideas.

CLICK HERE TO VEIW - IDEAS

We had 11 ideas and narrowed it down to 3 main ideas which were a food expiry tracker app, recipe suggesting app and adrenaline junky app, based on what would be able to create and what would be the most interesting and useful.

WEEK 2

We presented our Top 3 ideas to Mr Rafiz which were an adrenaline junky app, food tracker app and recipe suggestion app based on what is available in the pantry.

After consulting we decided to merge the food expiry date tracker app and recipe suggestion app.

Final app idea

We then had an online meeting about our group name and the name of our app.

Group name and app name idea

We settled for name Spoiler alert and Zerowaste Ninjas.

Why These Names?

  • Spoiler Alert (App Name) – A fun play on words that highlights preventing food spoilage while being catchy and memorable.
  • ZeroWaste Ninjas (Group Name) – Combines sustainability ("ZeroWaste") with efficiency and skill ("Ninjas"), showing a smart, action-driven approach to reducing food waste.

We then worked on our Problem statement, Objectives, and How might we statement.

Problem statement, Objectives, Aims and How might we statements

WEEK 3

We then consulted Mr Rafiz on our progress and received feedback.

Feedback:

  • Our how might we statements were too specific and we need to make them general without coming out to potentials solutions in the statement.
  • Analyse existing apps and find pain points and gain points of each app.
  • Look into ways to make the data entry process of expiry dates easier rather than manual entry.
We decided to see which apps to see the main type of apps that we should analyse which were Tracking, Recipe and scanning apps.

Tracker applications pain points and gain points

I then created a table of features in the apps and key take aways that we can include in our app.

Table of features

I also came up with a conclusion for the research which you can see below.

Conclusion to tracker app analysis

The other groupmates also did research about the scanning and Recipe apps.

We then refined some of how might we statements as well as our problem statement according to our feedback.

Samiha then worked on the project development timeline.

We also had to submit our project proposal slides for Task 1.

Food Tracker by ANNIKA ANGELA DAVIES

WEEK 4

We focused on Contextual Research about Scanning, Diet, Canned food and perishable food. I had to do research on diets. I focused on 5 parts which are

  1. General Healthy Diets – Focused on balanced nutrition and overall health.
  2. Weight Management Diets – Designed for weight loss or muscle gain.
  3. Medical & Allergen-Specific Diets – For individuals with medical conditions or food allergies.
  4. Ethical & Lifestyle Diets – Based on personal, religious, or ethical choices.
  5. Performance & Athletic Diets – Designed for athletes or high physical activity needs.

Contextual research

We then moved on to creating our Interview questions.

Initial interview questions

We then got feedback from Mr Rafiz and he advised us to create a survey as well to add on to our primary research.

We also refined our interview questions.

Final interview questions.

We had 6 sections for our interview which were

  1. User Demographics & Lifestyle – Questions about household size, cooking habits, dietary preferences, and meal planning.
  2. Personal Food Management & Expiry Habits – How users track food expiry and manage groceries.
  3. Challenges and Pain Points – Issues faced in food storage, expiry tracking, and kitchen organization.
  4. Expectations for a Food Expiry Tracker App – What users want in a food expiry tracking app and their experiences with existing solutions.
  5. Analytics and Usability – Interest in food management tools and preferred tracking methods.
  6. Awareness & Motivation – Willingness to use an expiry tracker app and key concerns about adopting one.
We were to interview 3 people each. I decided to interview 2 of my friends and my mother as they suit the target users.

We recorded the responses in a shared google doc

We then each analysed our own data.

We then made our Survey so that we collect from qualitative and quantitative data to better understand user needs.

Survey Analysis with summary of findings

Samiha, Simon and I did the Survey Analysis and I took 2 sections. We had 87 responses from Working professional, stay at home parents and students mainly.

We moved on to make our User personas and user journey maps. 3 of us did them while Samiha focused on doing the Art direction of the app.

We received feedback to explain where we got our data to make our user personas and so we did that.

CARD SORTING

Samiha and I then moved on and did the card sorting. We initially used an app called optimal workshop which is actually a  really good app for organising the card sorting data but even though we had a free trial we could only view 2 results. We had 51 cards ad 5 categories. We ended up having to redo the card sorting on a different website called Kardsort and reducing our card to 20 cards. We also asked 2 questions at the end of the card sorting for more user insights. The data was then analysed and we could move on to our site map and userflow.

Simon and Ou yang did the user flow and sitemap from our card sorting. Simon then worked on our monetisation  plan.

WEEK 5 -  WEEK 7

Samiha and I worked on the presentation and finding ways to improve our presentation as well as working on our prototypes.

We then practiced for our presentation and were actually really nervous. We then presented our presentation and had to quickly scheme through as there was not much time left for us to present. After we presented our work we received heartbreaking feedback that our app was redundant based on how the date entry was done through scanning and how that would not be sustainable as that does not correlate with human habits and eventually the app will feel more like a burden than adding value to peoples lives. I felt emotionally downcast that day as I had not slept the whole day and only to present and get feedback that made it feel like our work was null and void. Luckily for us Samiha had an optimistic outlook and motivated us to keep calm and just pick up the pieces. The other supervisor did give us an alternative though to maybe implement smart fridge detectors or sensors that send messages to the app.

We then all went home and started brainstorming I then had the idea of including the smart fridge or sensor Idea into our app instead of scanning so we went on to do research on sensors and redo our card sorting, Site map and user flow. I also had an idea to incorporate the feature to donate soon to expire foods to NGO's and Restaurants can also help give back to society. We all made the changes to our prototypes and did the best with the little time we had. In Major project 2 I would like to refine a lot that was done here and produce better work. I would like to redo the primary research based on the changes we made as well as refining my prototype.

REFLECTION

This module was very demanding in my opinion. We needed to constantly be thinking, or gathering data, or fixing something or coming up with new solutions. I honestly thought we were doing well and going at a good pace throughout the semester and constantly asking for feedback. I found that even though we faced a big hurdle its something we tried our best to rectify and there is always room for improvement in major project 2. I plan on doing a bit of improvements and research in this coming holiday and the months that follow up to Major project 2. They were many times were I had to pick myself up from certain things that happened during this semester that I find difficult to speak about but will most probably talk to the programme director about because I was actually supposed to defer this semester but decided to push through as they were some issues with me trying to differ and they were some things that did trigger me as last semester I was constantly sick and in a terrible mental state to a really extreme degree that was worrying. I am now doing much better this semester thanks to God and hope to do even better next semester and really put my best foot forward in this career. I would like to thank Samiha for being an amazing group leader as well as my groupmates for trying their best as well as well as Ms Wong Chui Yin for her honest feedback and helping us come up with solutions to our problems. I would like to thank Mr Rafiz where he could help and lastly my Family and friends for being an amazing support system.
