LECTURES
Week 1: Module briefing
Week 2: Lecture on the art of user-centered design.
Week 3: unable to attend class
Week 4: Presentation of task 1.
INSTRUCTIONS
For this task we are to select 3 company apps that you believe could
benefit from enhancements in their design. The objective is to identify all
existing drawbacks and propose potential solutions.
The 3 companies I came up with are
- EMGS
- Lotus
- Padini
NOTES FOR PRESENTAION
I first went through each app and wrote the weaknesses I noticed when using
the apps and found competive apps in the same category to give ideas on
potential solutions.

WEAKNESSES
1) Cluttered Interface:
The homepage is currently overloaded with elements and bright colors,
making it visually overwhelming for users.
2) Confusing Promotions:
With too many promotions displayed simultaneously, users might struggle to
identify the best deals.
3) Mixed Navigation:
Navigational elements blend with promotional content, complicating the
user journey. Clear separation and possibly a fixed bottom navigation bar
can provide easier access to essential sections.
4) Dense Information on Member Page:
The members' page is packed with various elements, creating a visually
cluttered experience.
5) Cart Page Design:
The cart page, while functional, lacks visual appeal and promotional
messages that encourage additional purchases.
6) Profile Page Layout:
The profile page feels congested and inconsistent in its visual
design.

WEAKNESSES
1) Homepage Overload:
Imagine walking into a room filled with so many decorations that you
can’t focus on the important things. The homepage has too many elements
competing for attention, making it hard to find announcements and user
interactions.
2) Media Page Confusion:
The play button on the media pages is like a prankster. It sits right on
top of important visuals and doesn’t even play a video when you click
it. Instead, it takes you to another page, leaving you puzzled.
3) Inconsistent Visual Hierarchy:
Think of a messy desk where everything is scattered without any order.
The layout doesn’t help you know what to look at or do first, creating a
chaotic and confusing experience.
4) Text Alignment and Spacing Issues:
The text fields look like a disorganized bookshelf, with books (texts)
misaligned and unevenly spaced. This makes it hard to quickly scan and
understand the information.
5) Profile Page Clutter:
The profile page feels like a cluttered workspace, with too much text,
especially around passport details. It’s overwhelming and makes it hard
to find what you need.
6) Repetitive Notifications:
It’s like getting the same reminder over and over again. Multiple
notifications for the same thing with the same timestamp can be annoying
and confusing, making you feel bombarded.
7) Uniform Notification Icons:
Imagine if all your apps used the same icon for every notification. It
would be hard to tell what’s what at a glance. The notifications in the
app all use the same icon, making it difficult to quickly identify
different types of messages.
1) Limited Product Visibility:
The homepage is overly focused on a single promotion, which restricts
the visibility of a wider range of products.
2) Minimal Engagement Features:
Beyond the featured promotion, the homepage lacks dynamic elements that
can captivate users. Adding engaging visual elements and interactive
components can improve user involvement.
3) Search Page Design:
The search page is mainly text-based, which fails to draw user
interest.
4) Wishlist Page Layout:
Only three items can be displayed on the wishlist page at a time, which
can be frustrating for users with larger purchases.
5) Profile Page Clutter:
The profile page feels congested and inconsistent in visual design,
making navigation difficult.
After taking down the notes I started on the presentation and found apps I
could use for the competitive analysis and then gave possible solutions in
relation to them.

Week 2 Draft Proposal, Week 2 (30/04/2024)
After I showed Mr Zeon my work. He advised me to analyse the emgs app as
it was a unique app to pick. He gave me feedback on giving solutions for
each weakness.
I then started my presentation for EMGS and read articles on ui/ux design
in education apps as well as reading other articles on ui/ux in general
for better understanding on the task.
I wanted to know the demographic of the users of the app so I went on the
EMGS website and looked for student data and found there was a diverse
group of users from all around the world.
user demographic from the website.
Once I completed my slides I recorded the presentation as time in class ran
out and got feedback on adding citations and a slide which summarises user
reviews as well as a slide for redesign strategies.

FEEDBACK
week 1:
- choose emgs as it is unique and not many students are doing it. for competitive analysis use apps in similar category (university students)
week 2:
- make more progression with slides
week 3:
- no feedback
week 4:
- For the user review section, please add a slide to summarize it.
- Include an additional slide on the redesign strategy before the references slide. You can base this on the solutions you provided for the weaknesses. This should be a summary of the solutions with some elaboration on what you will do.
- Make sure you include citations in the slides for the references listed
REFLECTION
Experience
This task was a real eye-opener for me in terms of designing apps that truly cater to people’s needs. I didn’t realize just how detailed and thoughtful the process needed to be until I got deep into it. Putting together the presentation was quite time-consuming; it took a lot of effort to organize my thoughts and make sure I included all the relevant articles and research findings.
observation
I observed that staying updated by reading articles on UI/UX and user behaviors is essential. It’s amazing how much you can learn about user preferences and habits just by diving into the latest research and trends. I also noticed how differently users interact with design elements, which highlighted the importance of creating tailored solutions that fit specific user needs
findings
I found that when designing an app, it's essential to keep in mind that users are at the core of all your decisions. There are many components to consider, and sometimes features that seem beneficial to us might actually be counterproductive for users. Thoughtful consideration of these aspects is crucial throughout the entire design process.
Overall, this task significantly broadened my perspective on app design. It underscored the importance of a user-centered approach and the need for thorough research and thoughtful planning. By staying updated on the latest UI/UX trends and understanding user behaviors, I realized how crucial it is to tailor design solutions to meet specific needs. The process, though time-consuming and complex, was incredibly rewarding. It reinforced that the essence of good design lies in prioritizing the user's experience and continuously iterating to improve functionality and satisfaction. This experience has motivated me to continue learning and refining my skills in UI/UX design, ensuring that users remain at the heart of my design decisions.
