REFLECTION

Experience:

Assignment 1: Proposal

I did not enjoy this part. I felt very confused and changed my topic about 3 times as some were too controversial, another would need extensive research along with other problems but I eventually settles for a topic based on Tiktok which I was satisfied with as I am a frequent user of it and find the app quite interesting. I felt better after reading the notes that Dr Jin chi provided as I was able to come us with a  hypothesis, research problem, problem statement research questions and objectives. In the beginning I was overwhelmed and had the urge of dropping the module due to how confused I felt. I eventually landed on MacGyvering my way out and just putting my best foot forward. Consulting Dr Charles allowed me to be very specific with my research questions as well as understanding the need to do this module.

Assignment 2: Critical Review

Finding articles was easy though sometimes they would not answer the research question so I had to go through quite a number of articles to find ones that could answer the research questions. Reading the articles sometimes felt like this (click here). Reviewing the articles was time consuming and required  a lot of focus but it enlightened me on the way the dopamine cycle works and an in-depth description of how one thing affects the other. I was glad to eventually find articles that can answer my research questions and research objectives. Learning about referencing and citations also made me rethink about some of the stuff I believe on the internet and making sure the information I believe has reliable sources.

Assignment 3: Primary Data

This part was less challenging than the first two assignments as I was now compiling questions according to my research questions and objections. The difficult part was gathering responses as most people are not willing to answer surveys. Analysing the data was time consuming but overally it was okay.

Assignemnt 4: Final presentation

Doing the presentation was okay as I am used to presenting and so it was not a bad experience

Overall the module did cause me a lot of stress and it was quite challenging but it required some time to sit down and understand the basics.

Observation:

Assignment 1: Proposal

having a clear understanding of what a hypothesis, research problem, research question etc is very important to ensure clear understanding of the topic and what the research is about. I observed that I tend to be discouraged when I feel confused as well.

Assignment 2: Critical Review

I noticed I have to read the articles in bits and drabs to truly understand what is being said. I also observed that reading the articles aloud helped me retain the information.

Assignment 3: Primary Data

This is very time consuming and requires a lot of effort to carefully analyse the data. I also noticed that in order to get responses I should message people individually rather than posting on groups as its more effective and more people actually do the survey that way.

Findings:

Conducting research and analyzing data can be time-consuming and require a lot of effort. It is important to carefully analyze the data and draw meaningful conclusions.

Finding articles that are relevant to your research questions can be challenging, and it may require going through multiple articles to find the ones that can answer your research questions

Gathering responses for surveys can be difficult, and it may be more effective to message people individually rather than posting on groups to increase response rates.

The limitations of my research, such as a limited sample size or limited reach of the survey, can affect the generalizability of the findings.

The addictive nature of TikTok's UI/UX design, such as infinite scrolling and autoplay, can contribute to addictive usage patterns and negative impacts on daily routines, tasks, and mental well-being.

Users value features that promote self-regulation, such as personalized usage limits and notifications, to help manage their time on TikTok and strike a healthier balance between engagement and well-being

TikTok's design can have both positive and negative impacts on users, and individual differences and usage habits play a role in the impact of addictive app design.

Design optimizations that prioritize user well-being can help avoid addiction while maintaining user engagement on TikTok
