WEEK 11: Creating Poster for Final project

MY BIOGRAPHY

INTRO - Annika is my name, I am a 20 year old mixed Zimbabwean most people call me Nik nak like the snack . I was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe which is the second largest city in Zimbabwe which is ironically a very quiet and peaceful city. One of my favourite things about myself is my hair.

PARAGRAPH 1 - I was raised in an interesting way as my parents had me when they were fairly young so it felt like i was growing up with them and they even felt like my friends at times so they are well versed on technology and all the latest trends. I am the eldest daughter of an african household and that alone can tell you my character. I am very goal- oriented, outspoken, stubborn, independent and most times a perfectionist. I love watching cartoon, movies, series, youtube videos, tik toks so on and so fourth. I love watching sitcoms especially African American ones such as The fresh prince of bel air

PARAGRAPH 2 - I am a born again Christian. My faith is something that I discovered on my own I was not really pressured into going to church growing up or anything though I did go to a catholic highschool. Back home I am known as a “coloured” which is basically a person of mixed European and african or Asian ancestry I do not particularly know what I am mixed with as my family is basically a generation of coloureds who married other coloureds so sometimes I have an identity crisis because of this. The only sport I ever played and actually enjoyed was squash which is quite an unknown sport. My hair is something that is quite important to me I grew up thinking my hair was not up to standard and I always wanted it to be straight

SUMMARY - I am a Christian Zimbabwean girl who has a passion for embracing my african background and I do that by embracing my hair who also loves movies , cartoons , tik toks and creating aesthetic content .

STATEMENT ABOUT MY WORK

INTRO - My work is going to be focused around my identity as an African I will have an afro futuristic theme and have clones of myself in the poster.

PARAGRAPH 1 - I would like my work to have a fun vibe to it as well as it showcasing my hair. I think I will go for a bit of a 90s theme and make my work similar to the start of a sitcom. I want to use neutral colours in my work as I like neutral colours and the 90s had alot of neutral colours in fashion and they were very simplistic

PARAGRAPH 2 - I would like my work to showcase my personality by showing my love for makeup, sitcoms and my hair. I want it to show my humorous size as well by making a lighthearted poster with simple animation

SUMMARY
My work will be centered around a 90s sitcom vibe like the fresh prince of bel air where the main attraction is my hair and clones of myself.

STEP 1:FINDING INSPIRATION

                        1)2)

                   3)       4)

These are the 4 poster references I really liked and wanted to base my work on. I really liked the first poster reference design because the boys in the image are staring straight at the camera to give the effect that they are looking at the veiwer to create a sense of connectivity to the audience

For poster reference 4 I liked the clone idea I found the image to be striking and interesting to look at.

In the third poster reference the woman with the afro is the focal point and water is running from her hair as it turns into aspects of nature which I felt was really cool and shows the connection between african women and their "roots".

In poster reference 2 I liked the blended look and felt like I could use it in my work

STEP 1:SKETCHING OUT IDEAS

fig  sketch ideas

For my sketch ideas I drew out how I would place the different clones of myself shown on the left of fig 1.1 then I also had an idea of me being in the center with clouds and lightning shown on the right

STEP 2 : TAKING PICTURES

I got a friend from class to take pictures of me I decided to do my make up and add a scar to my eye like Scar from The lion king which one of  my favourite films and a film which gave insight to some african culture to the whole world. I also wore my necklace which has the shape of Africa.

POSTER DESIGN PROGRESS

I started off by using what I learned in the recolouring exercise where I selected the subject then selected and masked the subject and used the refine brush to get the details of my hair and have a more seamless image.

I did that for each image then resized the images accordingly.

I then added a starry background which I made adjustments to so that it can go well with the black I was wearing.

TITLE : The fresh princess of Zimbabwe

ARTISTIC STATEMENT : My work shows My curl pattern in my afro and clones of myself showing different reactions of myself and its as if Im looking at the viewer. The poster  is a representation of the complexity and diversity of the human experience. Its vibrant colors and intricate patterns evoke a sense of wonder and awe, evoking a sense of connection between the poster and the viewer. I used very neutral tones and a stary background because I felt it would go well and give a floating effect when I eventually animate my work. I edited the pictures to bring out my skin tone better as well as my hair colour.
