LIFE BELOW WATER
STATISTICS
- Oceans cover 70% of the planet Earth and make up 97% of Earth’s water.
- Over 3 billion people depend on marine ecosystems to make their living. It’s estimated that the goods and services the ocean provides are worth at least US$2.5 trillion per year, making it the world’s seventh-largest economy.
- It’s estimated that we only know 230,000 of the two million living species in the ocean.
- More than 80% of the ocean remains unexplored. Since it’s difficult to protect what we don’t know, only about 7% of the world’s oceans are designated as marine protected areas.

27 OCTOBER 2020
Our blue planet is defined by its oceans. Sadly, the saying ‘plenty more
fish in the sea’ could soon become obsolete.
FACTS ABOUT LIFE BELOW WATER
- OCEANS ARE GIANT SPONGES Corals absorb 30% of CO2 to reduce climate change, but this has caused ocean acidity to rise by 30%, leading to the destruction of 50% of shallow water coral reefs with no prospects for recovery.)
- Estimates show 150 million tonnes of plastic in the ocean today and 8 million metric tons of plastic waste entering each year.
- By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans.
- The IUCN has declared 1,414 species of fish, or 5% of known species, as endangered.
- In May 2020, the smooth handfish (sympterichthys unipennis), a shallow-water bottom-dweller with spiky fins and a barb-like protrusion on its forehead, was declared extinct for the first time in modern day history.)
- conserve coastal and marine areas
- end subsidies contributing to overfishing
- increase the economic benefits from sustainable use of marine resources
- increase scientific knowledge, research and technology for ocean health
- support small scale fishers
- implement and enforce international sea law
- protect and restore ecosystems
- reduce marine pollution
- reduce ocean acidification
- sustainable fishing
- Find a Goal 14 charity you want to support. Any donation, big or small, can make a difference!
- Never buy bottled water – boil, filter, chlorine, rainwater, do what you can.
- Reduce waste – much of the waste that we produce on land ends up in the oceans. Stop using plastic bags: Usage and wrong disposal of plastic is a major cause of marine pollution.
- Run a campaign on the effects of plastic use on the seas and oceans.
- Organize a cleanup project for rivers and oceans. Engage your whole community to clean up a local river, seaside or an ocean.
- Buy local and certified fish. You can support small-scale producers by shopping in local markets and shops.
INSPIRATION
I actually did not come up with sketches because I thought it would be easy
for me to just get right into it (not a good idea would not recommend)
STEP 3 : Digitalisation
so for this step I decided I really like inspo #5 and was going to go with
that and play around with the fish I add and add my own twist
FINAL WORK
OUTLINE
Title of work: Save our seas (SOS)
In my work I portrayed the way we make life below water feel when we pollute its habitat (shown by the angry expression on the turtle's face). I chose a font called waterpark since we are dealing with marine life and water so that it compliments the atmosphere I am trying to create. I used very few words so that when people see it they do not get discouraged b y too many words. I decided to have a sunset background which in a way compliments the maybank logo colours. I also included the logo on the turtle as a scale on the turtle's shell. There is a hand throwing a crumbled paper in the sea to depict how us as humans litter. There is a fish tail shown at the end of the word "splash" to bring out the splash meaning more. I hope my design brings awareness about how our actions of pollution affect life below water.By featuring a lovable animal character and a catchy slogan, the poster aims to encourage viewers to take responsibility for their waste and make efforts to protect natural environments. The use of cartoon style also adds a playful lighthearted element to the message, making it more approachable and memorable for people of all ages
REFLECTION
I found this task quite challenging, the reason I felt this way because I had a "genius" idea of not doing sketches and this made the process confusing and it was difficult coming up with ideas and figuring out good placement in the poster. Overally it was an inspirational and educational assignment as I got to become more environmentally conscious and be a better person and help prevent pollution as well as conserve life below water.
