INSTRUCTIONS

ANIMATED VISUAL NOVEL

Requirements
  • create a series of illustrations and compile it in a
  • multipaneled single page artwork.
  • Atleast ONE panel should be animated
  • A cover page of selected act from Digital triptych
STEP 1 - Choosing which Act I want to use as cover page
STEP 2- Sketching ideas for visual novel
STEP 3 - Digitalising sketch ideas
STEP 4 - Animated selected panels

STEP 1 - Choosing cover page

                        ACT 1                                           ACT 2                                   ACT 3

3 Act digital triptych

I decided to go with ACT 3 as the cover page as I felt like I would be able to animate the sequence of events in that Act effectively and animated blood in that scene to show correlation between the cover page and I would also be able to portray the animated style easily as well.

STEP 2 - Sketching out ideas

Different scenes to show in layout
  1. man trips over cat
  2. he becomes infuriated and his wife tried to stop him from hurting the cat
  3. he axes his wife and she dies
 SKETCHES

After I came up with these sketches I decided on a layout for the panels. I went for a fairly simple layout that would be able to follow
               LAYOUTS

STEP 3 - Digitalising sketches

PROGRESSION OF WORK

I used reference images and used image trace and 3 colours for each image then modified each colour by recolouring them and using the pencil tool to refine the images. I added a text box where the wife is telling the man to calm down and in the text box I found a font from dafont.com called "Komika Boo" which shows that the woman is terrified and her voice is shaky the text bubble has a wavy outline to amplify the fear. As she speaks she is cut off to show that that is when her husband starts axing her.
For the blood I drew it using the pencil tool and added different shades of red to add some depth to the blood. I used smoke to show the level of anger of the man.

STEP 4 - Animating panels
I decided to animate the panel which shows the woman on the floor and blood is gushing on the floor I did this by duplicating the panel several times and moving the blood frame by frame I then saved the imaged and Loaded in scripts In photoshop where I then added a timeline and then exported it as a GIF.(I learnt this in Typography thanks to Mr Vinod)

FINAL ANIMATED COMIC NOVEL - THE BLACK CAT ANIMATED NOVEL

REFLECTION

I really enjoyed this task I found that always starting with research and sketches is very important and it helps with the flow of ideas. Attention to detail is important as well as portraying  a consistent theme. I was pleased with the final outcome of my work and the tutorials that Mr Hafiz gave us really helped in making this work possible, though this is the beginning of IVN I know there is so much more potential in my work and I can produce impactful and eye-catching work.
